On 10 May 1933 were burned by the Nazis in Germany, books and works of writers
and poets. „Books from the fire“ reminded every year on 10th May at this awful,
inhuman event and the associated cultural destruction and impoverishment.
The initiative was founded in 2005 by actor Wolfgang Klein, honorary cultural
and Social Affairs Attaché of the pressure group German actor e.V. launched.
Every citizen on 10 May each year to check the books, which were the Nazis in
1933 by a victim of the flames. The action takes place in public places, in
front of or in city halls and other public buildings, libraries, bookstores,
museums, nursing homes, schools, community colleges, universities, houses,
community centers, churches, etc. instead.

"We think it is important that as many people participate and show courage in
this way, and enter to democracy and tolerance in our country," said the
48-year-old mime - and is delighted that many institutions support this action
with, eg the German Association of Cities, the Reading Foundation, the community
college associations and some education ministries.
Also on the pages of "Culture Portal Germany", the Internet platform of the
State Minister of Culture and Media Bernd Neumann, the action "books from the
fire" is published. Even the charge of culture, European Commissioner Jan Figel,
can by its minister, Bernd Biervert, say in an email: "Mr Figel welcomes your
action very much and is happy that they enjoy such a large success can be. The
'cooling- ', that you are planning on 10 May, an important signal not only to
the world of culture, that something terrible like the book burning is never
happen again."

Olaf Krätke followed in 2006, the call, but did not join countless speakers and
presenters in major cities, but to bring this important event closer to the
pupils closer on the country. For this reason he chose the elementary school in
Biessenhofen (in Allgäu) and read there works of Kurt Tucholsky, Erich Kästner
and Bertolt Brecht for school teachers and pupils of the 8th and 9 Classes.

This reading was so well received, both the pupils inside as well as the
teachers, which he repeated in 2007, the reading there. This time it was even

For 2008, the well-known and popular comedian Helmut
Schleich and Olaf Krätke a common reading to plan in
a school in Schongau, the hometown of Mr. Schleich.
The two artists have known each other, and
appreciate the cabaret production, "Singspiel on
